Sometimes it almost feels too easy taking pictures in New York City, other days there seems to be nothing more impossible. Every single day I walk the endless city streets, I travel in the tunnels underneath looking for my own fictional reality something to capture and call my own.
My goal is to shoot and post a photo a day, everyday for the next 3 years. To capture the ultimate candid moment, the nameless faces, the disregarded eightieth of a second that may have lived and died unseen if it wasn’t for the click of my shutter. To create a diary of random thoughts, spontaneous writing and the stories inspired by the stolen moments captured by my camera.
What makes my photographs different from the countless photographers that fill the streets? Nothing. However they are mine and I decided to share them with the few that may stumble upon my little photographic diary.
Who the hell are you? Just some bored 30 something guy looking for a place to post the photos that I take in-between the "real" photo shoots. "Real" = stuff I get paid for.
How much time do you spend shooting for this site? Anywhere from 5 min to a few hours. Most of the shots during the week are taken during my commute to and from my office.(The job, the one that pays for my extravagant life style.)
How many photos do you take a day for this site? Often I only get to shoot one, the most I have shot was about 800. If I had to guess an average, it would be about 25 photos a day. This is not counting the stuff I shoot for work (studio and nite-life)
You took my photo but I don't see it? Sorry. Contact me with the day I took your photo and the location and I'll gladly send you a copy.
Why do you do this? Two reasons. First is as header of the site reads; To keep the boredom away. Treating this project as you would a job, it forces me to look at things differently, to shoot things that I normally wouldn't shoot. To break my eye.
What do you shoot? Mostly a Nikon D1X, D70S, and a D300.
What's up with the sites name, thedailydrink.com? The original thought was that it would be a replacement for all the drinking that I do when I'm not working. I'm a recovering alcoholic, every morning I'm recovering. The more structured time that I have, the less time for drinking. However as you can see I often figure a way around this by shooting photos in the bars.
What's up with the nick name "Shoofly"? My real name is Justin Makler but when I was really young my granddaddy use to call me Shoofly. He said that I was like a fly on a horses ass, nothing but bothersome.
Will you take my photo? Sure.

You're a very talented photographer. I like your style and thought process. I'd like to keep in contact with you incase anyone at my record label would like to pay you to shoot photos. Most likely that would be me, but I'll see what the other guys think about your work. I will stay in contact with you, then we'll talk about what photos i want and pay.

HOW DID YOU COME UPON THIS LAKEVIEW CASTLE? MY DAD TOOK A PICTURE OF THE "MOAT" YEARS, AND YEARS AGO. I HAD FORGOT ALL ABOUT IT, UNTIL I TOLD MY DAUGHTER, AND WE GOT INTO YOUR SITE, JUST BY LUCK. DID YOU EVER FIND ANYONE WHO HAD PICTURES, OF THE CASTLE BEFORE IT FELL INTO SHAMBLES? THE SITE IS GREAT, AND I REALLY ENJOYED IT ALOT, ALONG WITH MY DAUGHTER. THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME. AND I THOUGHT ONLY "I" TOOK STUPID PICTURES. I HAVE SOME GREAT STORM PICTURES, AND A GREAT ONE OF THE BRIDGE FROM THE ONCE "FLOATING" BOAT. SINCERELY DUSTIE K.

i'm sorry i'm not able to use your rss to open a space in my blog.
because your rss is about only this page,
instead to work aboiut the title of your daily photos. If you made rss about your photos is easier to open an aggregator that shows the links to your permalink everyday.
write me, if you want.
Thak you again for your beautiful art.
However I'll put immediately your site to my favourites.

OMG I love your sybway series and I think that it would make a perfect photobook....I am not a professional photography but i have a cheap $20 digital camera and I have been photographing people all over Baltimore and addingmy poetry to it. Some photo's inspired the poems. Let me know when your book is out.

Many of your photos are really special, but it was the stories you told about them that struck me most. About that boy that was arrested in the subway, the homeless person with a broken leg, the shop closed due to family illness. I'm sorry you quit posting new photos. I hope everything is alright and you've just been too busy.

Amazing shots with clever commentary!
Thanks for sharing!
Where have you been since August?
On average, what's the damage to get permission to use a photo?

Passing by your pics it seems that's is easier to get to know you by them than in person...the capacity you have to see beauty in the day by day... meanwhile the rest of us walk blind by the boredom, avoiding life in it splendor
